BROADCASTERS’ DECLARATION

World Bank to endorse the WSIS Broadcasters’ Declaration and support a round-table discussion – including Jim Wolfensohn – between heads of government and broadcasters at Tunis WSIS II, November 2005

MEDIA INFRASTRUCTURE

World Bank investment in media infrastructure:
• universal access to radio
• basic production equipment
• transition to digital

QUALITY STANDARDS

• Recognition – also by World Bank – that independent quality broadcasting is key to development and good governance.
• World Bank to help fund reforms needed to achieve certification through internationally recognized standards – ISAS BC 9001 (International Standards Organization, ISO); promoting both quality commercial broadcasting and transition from state broadcasting to editorially independent PSB (www.Media-Society.org)


LOBBYING GOVERNMENTS

With support of World Bank, World Broadcasting Unions and individual broadcasters to lobby national governments on importance of independent media in WSIS process and in general economic and social development.
