NEW UNIVERSAL QUALITY STANDARD FOR MEDIA ORGANIZATIONS
From June 2010 onwards, ISAS BCP 9001 is the new quality management standard serving all media organizations.
The evolution of modern media organizations towards multimedia, work convergence, as well as the various feedbacks coming from media users (40 organizations, over 5 years) lead the expert panel in charge to complement and merge into one universal standard the good management practices recommended to media professionals.
The ISAS BCP 9001:2010 standard replaces the ISAS BC 9001:2003 (for broadcasting industry and the Internet) and ISAS P 9001:2005 (for print media) standards. It also totally endorses the 2008 version of ISO 9001.
The Standardization Committee reasserted the managerial vocation of the standard, focusing on organization and leaving out the content issue. The expert panel also confirmed that any media organization can implement ISAS BCP 9001 standard, but only editorially independent companies can apply for certification. ISAS BCP 9001 maintains all requirements coming from ISAS BC 9001 and ISAS P 9001. Main changes apart from the merging of BC and P standards are:
- Introduction of a new chapter 5.8 on risk analysis and mitigation,
- Addition of a requirement in chapter 6.4 on safety and security of journalists and crews in dangerous areas,
- Precision on purchasing processes related to contents,
- Simplification of the Quality Manual, following ISO 9001:2000 and 2008 versions.

The Media and Society Foundation
An international initiative of media professionals : universal media quality management standard.
Media is facing new significant challenges. Commercial and political pressures are threatening its credibility and weakening its influence on the society. Media transparency and accountability are needed to establish a trusting relationship between the media and its readers, listeners or viewers, but also its numerous other stakeholders, i.e. its own staff, the advertisers, the public at large, the civil society, public authorities, etc.
The time has come for the media to claim its commitment to its own professional and ethical standards and demonstrate that it is enforcing the values it is upholding.
The Media and Society Foundation – a Swiss-based initiative of prominent international media professionals – has gathered together the main principles that are universally shared by media organizations. It has developed from them an ISO 9000 media-specific quality management standard, ISAS BCP 9001 for broadcasters, Internet content producers and the press. This standard is available to any media organizations interested in quality policy, training and certification by independent, non-governmental auditors.
Conditions to use the ISAS BCP 9001 standard
ISAS BCP 9001 standard is public and can be freely used by any
